No Power...
New Hampshire was hit by the worst ice storm in our power company's history causing most of the state to be without power. We are going on day three without power, water or (*gasp*) Internet. We are currently staying at a hotel with three dogs a teenager and my wife and I. This will cause a few shipping delays. Please spread the word.

WINNERS announced: Michael Knost Column!
For those just hearing about it, I will write a column for Shroud
Magazine, focusing on an up-and-comer in the horror industry with a
short story from that artist following.
The winners are:
Ray Turner
Jan Irvin
Bob Freeman
The winning title . . . ProgKNOSTications.
Each of these winners will receive a free subscription to Shroud
Magazine and signed copies of Legends of the Mountain State 1 and 2.
Congratulations!
And speaking of the column, Nate Southard will be featured in the next
issue . . . along with his excellent short story: Inside the Box.
IMPORTANT CHANGES TO SHROUD
It is with a heavy heart that I change these rates. It is NOT my intention to devalue the author's work in any way. I understand that it is difficult for professional writers to obtain the respect and remuneration that they truly deserve and it was always my goal to offer that. However, with this flat rate plan in place, it will help me mitigate costs and hopefully get my writers paid faster.
This rate change will NOT effect other publications/books, novellas/etc.
This rate change will NOT effect payments already discussed and agreed upon. If we discussed a payment rate for a piece that has not been published yet, we will continue to honor that (this applies to you columnists!)
Also, beginning immediately, we are CLOSED TO SUBMISIONS. We have begun a reading period.
WE WILL BE OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS FROM FEBRUARY 1st through MARCH 30th, 2009 and then from MAY 1ST THROUGH JUNE 30TH 2009. We have created these reading periods to help us better respond to submissions. Unfortunately submissions that come in outside of those periods will not be read. Again, we are only doing this in order to better serve our writing community.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Busy busy!
I am currently on a work-related business trip to Washington DC.
Next weekend will have me at the Highland games up in NH with my family and friends, and then the weekend after that will be Context 21.
Please do not fear as I am hard at work on getting these loose-ends tied up and not spending as much time online on MySpace or this message board.
Thanks!

Huge news for Shroud Magazine!
While this does not currently guarantee that Shroud will be picked up by these retailers, it DOES mean that Ingram will present Shroud to each of them and do its best to sell it.
If all goes as well as I hope and expect, Shroud Magazine will grace the shelves of every Barnes & Noble and B. Dalton in the Country.
I see this as a major accomplishment in my efforts to legitimize the magazine as well as the genres it showcases.
Quite sincerely I have all the writers, editors, artists and customers to thank for this.
Seriously, you all have supported the magazine over the past 9 months, and it is that support that has got us to where we are now.
So just where ARE we now?
Well unfortunately this does not mean that I can quit my day job and live off of the Shroud teat--although my wife and I would love to do nothing more.
There is an 8 week process, at least, where Ingram submits copies to the retailers and they decide whether they want it or not. Then they place an order for X copies, and I fulfill that order. If they sell, they order more, if not... well who knows?
In an event, we have made it this far! So thank you all and keep your fingers crossed.

Northern Haunts CLOSED to submissions.
WOW! What an absolutely wonderful project to work on. I have had the privilege of reading scores of delightfully wicked and well-crafted stories. NICE JOB!!! The pre-orders have been steady as well.
I have received a good number of submissions from people who have been personally touched by cancer, and that has made this anthology even more worth it.
We have had stories written by Nate Kenyon, Steve Vernon, and Stephen Mark Rainey as well.
I want to thank all of your for your support on this project. I endeavored to select those stories that fit the theme of the anthology, as well as select a nice variety as well. Having said that, I found a number of stories that offered different perspectives on classic rural myths and monsters. Very cool.
So, with the exception of a couple of last minute submissions to read, and a rewrite or two, Northern Haunts is now CLOSED to submissions.
Congrats to all of you. If you have any personal questions about why or why not your submission was/was not selected, please contact me via PM or email.
I will post the table of contents this week.
The stories have begun to be funneled to one of my talented assistant editors, Christa, for her delicate line editing touch, and she has begun to get them back to me.
All that will remain is the typesetting and the printing.
I PROMISE that this will all be done as very quickly as I am able. The worst thing I can do now is take your beautiful work and fail to give it the respect it deserves by rushing the last part of this process.
Not only will this book be available through a few international and national distribution services, but I am going to really push to get it into New Englnd gift shops and independent bookstores as well.
It will, of course, be available through all of the major online outlets to include Amazon, BN.com, Target.com, as well as others.
Fantastic JOB everyone!

Intruder, by Cindy Little
An evil unseen force is forcing Carol to try and do unspeakably harmful things to her daughter Jennie. When the powers of an ancient malevolent creature invade a quiet suburban household, a young mother is forced into a pitched battle for the life of her child.
A shocking and intelligent novella from veteran supernatural investigator, Cindy Little.
"With her first foray into dark fantasy/fiction, Cindy Little already demonstrates an impressive imagination. Combining the all-too-true effects of postpartum depression with ancient faerie folklore, she weaves a surprisingly hard-hitting tale of a woman torn between doubts about her own sanity and the maternal desire to fiercely protect her child at all costs. With its combination of suspense and action, Intruders delivers on its promise."
-JG Faherty, BONES and THE JESUS ORCHID
"Postpartum depression gets a horrific make-over in Cindy Little's Intruder, as the dark path on which a new mother finds herself trapped takes a sudden turn into the territory of primal myth. Intruder is a chilling depiction of the corruption of a mother's love, reminiscent of Twilight Zone encounters with strange and terrible monsters who remain invisible to most while spreading suffering and death. Evoking the horror of the unknown, Intruder delivers chills as it takes the reader along the dreadful path of a mother's nightmare."
